Connecting in Community

It was one year ago today that I left for Spain and the Camino de Santiago. The pilgrimage changed my life. What I experienced was community. I didn’t create it or define it; I only chose to participate in it. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Christian Theologian who resisted Hitler, was imprisoned for it, and eventually killed because of it. In his 1938 book, “Life Together,” he wrote: “Christian community is not an ideal which we must realize; it is rather a reality created by God in Christ, in which we may participate… not out of love for one another, but for the love for Christ’s sake.” In other words, Christian community is the expression of Christ’s love freely shared among us, in which we choose to participate.”
